The Imagine Science Film Festival, now in its 12th year, is an experimental interdisciplinary sci-art festival seeking to open new dialogues between scientists, filmmakers, and artists. Over the week of October 18–25, we will mix genres, subjects, even fact and fiction, in exploring crucial scientific issues. The theme of the 12th Imagine Science Film Festival is EMERGENCE, the ability of simple parts, acting together, to give rise to complicated properties unobserved in the parts alone. By this process, complexity appears spontaneously at every level of the universe, not an anomaly but a basic and deeply ingrained trait of all that exists. By this process, discrete atoms erect elaborate structures, ecosystems form and refine, and coordinated efforts bring about unforeseen and powerful effects. If simple components can be imagined, even expected, to accomplish so much, then this suggests a path forward in uncertain times. Against universal entropy, even the individually inconsequential possess the synthetic power to collectively effect change. And on planet Earth, in 2019, this may be no small matter.

Eugene Lang College will host lab workshops, film screenings, panels, and Q&A with filmmakers between Oct 19 and 20. Over the course of the week, other events will take place across the city, and we encourage you to review the entire schedule and to reserve tickets via their links to Eventbrite.

Events on The New School campus will be free for New School students with code ISFF12NEW but students must register on ISFF's Eventbrite and present their ID on-site at film screenings.

Each film screening on the New School Campus on Oct 20th will be followed by a 30-minute panel discussion with faculty, scientists, and filmmakers.

Most events at other locations will be available to students at discounts with code ISFF12STUDENT (prices for these venues will range from $8.00-$18.00 per event, excluding the following venues which do not provide discounts: AMNH, Spectacle, UnionDocs, etc).
